Principles for the Optimal Use of Proton Pump Inhibitors (only available in French)

03-31-2010 | Médicaments: Usage optimal

The criteria for optimal use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have been modified and are now the principles for optimal use, which are designed to assist general practitioners in their treatment decisions. The document titled Principes d’usage optimal des inhibiteurs de la pompe à protons 2010 (Principles for the Optimal Use of Proton Pump Inhibitors 2010) discusses the optimal use of PPIs in the management of:

  • uninvestigated dyspepsia with or without a prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux (GER) symptoms;
  • investigated dyspepsia without a prevalence GER symptoms;
  • uninvestigated dyspepsia related to the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or acetylsalicylic acid (ASA);
  • investigated dyspepsia without a prevalence of typical or atypical GER symptoms.

Additionally, to most effectively prescribe PPIs, a tool is available that features the four key points to consider when choosing treatment.

These tools were developed by the Conseil du médicament, now known as INESSS. INESSS is continuing to distribute these tools, as the information they contain is still current.
