An update of the Appropriate Use of 14 Biomedical Laboratory Tests document (INESSS, 2014) is ongoing. Please see the information below.

In Canada, biomedical laboratory tests account for approximately 5% of total healthcare expenditures, and between 20% and 40% of tests done may be of low clinical value or inappropriate.

Inappropriate use of biomedical laboratory tests exerts financial pressure on the healthcare system, generates waste, unnecessarily increases the workload of healthcare professionals and laboratory personnel, and may result in more harm than benefit for patients. Furthermore, inappropriate utilization of tests can limit access to relevant testing and prolong turnaround times for results required in clinical decision-making. These issues highlight the importance of selecting tests that are necessary and appropriate to the clinical context.

These publications are part of a series of projects aimed at updating a practical tool covering 14 biomedical laboratory tests commonly ordered in clinical practice. The objective is to promote the appropriate use of laboratory testing by reducing low-value test requests and harmonizing practices across Québec. Guidance sheets are provided to support healthcare professionals in applying best practices, along with reports presenting implementation strategies and recommendations to facilitate uptake and integration into practice.
