Falls and fall-related injuries are frequent and serious problems for elderly patients in hospital or living in short- or long-term care facilities. The Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS) is concerned about falls in the elderly, which is why it has asked the Institut national d’excellence en santé et en services sociaux (INESSS) to review the scientific literature in order to:

• Identify studies conducted in health care facilities (short- and long-term care) that assessed the specific impact of delirium management strategies on the rate of falls in patients living in care facilities
• Provide a reference list of studies that defined methods for classifying patients based on their risk of falls in short- and long-term care
• Identify studies conducted in health care facilities (short- and long-term care) that assessed interventions to reduce the rate of falls in patients living in care facilities
